European style trowels are good for scooping out holes, but their curved blades aren't so good for cutting through roots. Indian farmers and gardeners rely on Khurpas of several sizes. Their strong forged blades can be sharpened to a keen edge for weeding with a pushing action. Or they can be gripped the other way to scoop planting holes. These are strong, long-lasting tools -- and a very good value.
